Abstract

This article, dedicated to the life and work of Håkan Friman, provides a personal reflection on the author’s over 20 years of involvement with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in various capacities, with a focus on the procedural legal framework of the Court. Over the years, through efforts to learn from the lessons of the first years of operations of the Court, judicial proceedings have been simplified and become more efficient and expeditious. Håkan Friman contributed to the negotiations on the founding documents of the ICC, and as Judge and President of the Court, the author relied on his support in the search for ways to streamline and improve the proceedings he had contributed so much to frame, as charted by this article.
