Mobile application development is rapidly evolving with prodigious economic and scientific interest. One of the major reasons for mobile application development failure is the increasing number of mobile platforms; a number of organizations endorse mobile application development prior to understanding the associated development challenges of each target platform. The objective of this paper is to identify the challenges of native, web and hybrid mobile applications, which can undermine the successful development of such applications. We have performed Systematic Literature Review (SLR) by applying customized search strings derived from our research question. We have identified challenges such as fragmentation, testing, compatibility, and performance etc. as key challenges in mobile application development. Our ultimate aim is to develop a framework in order to enable organizations to develop mobile applications (native, web or hybrid) effectively.
