The design of innovative products requires structured product planning, which combines aspects from various lifecycle phases of the future product. In order to increase transparency of the singular lifecycle phases in respect to systematic product planning, an integrated understanding of the product lifecycle is essential. Thus, a major focus in this paper is to provide a reference model of the lifecycle based on existing literature. Further, interrelations within and in-between the singular phases of the lifecycle are presented. These interrelations should already be considered in the early stage of product planning in order to make the product manageable for the different stakeholders throughout the lifecycle. To disclose the interrelations in-between various lifecycle phases, different ‘Design for X’ guidelines are analysed in detail concerning the production, utilisation and disposal of products.
