Abstract

PURIFICATION OF CHORISMIC ACID 261 tion of the structure shown for chorismic acid was obtained by examination of a deuterium oxide solution of barium chorismate by nuclear-magneticresonance spectroscopy (Gibson & Jackman, 1963). Chorismic acid can be formulated as the 3-enol- pyruvic ether of tran8-3,4-dihydroxycyclohexa-1,5dienecarboxylic acid. SUMMARY 1. Chorismic acid, a new intermediate in aromatic biosynthesis, is the 3-enolpyruvic ether of trans-3,4-dihydroxycyclohexa-1 ,5-dienecarboxylic acid.
