Austria covers an area of 84,000 km with altitudes up to 3800 metres and a wide range of different landscapes. The proportion of ground covered by forest is 47% and this forest area is increasing about 2000 ha per year. At the same time about 7000 ha of grassland and arable land are lost to concrete and asphalt areas for roads, settlements and industry. So grassland and arable land in total decrease about 9000 ha per year.
