Abstract

Engineers become involved in environmental planning both as citizens and as managers or users of resources. Their impact is potentially very great, and thus they carry a heavy responsibility to themselves and society as a whole. This paper examines the need for environmental planning, outlines government environmental administration in the United Kingdom and the United States, discusses proposals for New Zealand, and suggests ways in which engineers could be better prepared to accept the changing role that the paper envisages.
