Abstract

This is a survey of the properties of liquid crystals, ranging much more widely than its title suggests. As well as describing the astonishing variety of behaviour displayed when electromagnetic fields act on liquid crystals and when liquid crystals affect the passage of electromagnetic waves, the book gives a catalogue of the physical and chemical structure of these substances, of their elastic and viscous properties, and of their actual and potential applications.
