Much of what is done in mathematical physics research is a question of fashion. This would not be surprising in, for example, pure mathematics which is not – in theory at any rate – constrained by questions of relevance to the real world, but physicists attempt to understand natural phenomena and surely these problems are of an unvarying nature.
