The design goal of routing protocol for Wireless sensor networks(WSNs) is to reduce the node energy consumption as the energy and computation ability of WSNs are limited. In order to decrease the dead speed of the nodes, and prolong the network lifetime, this paper studied several typical equal, unequal clustering routing protocols, and proposed an low-energy consumption unequal clustering protocol(LCUCR),which adopted multi-hop in inter-cluster communication. The novel protocol took energy and distance factors into fitness function to select cluster heads and sub-cluster heads, cluster head communicates with base station through sub-cluster heads, meanwhile, forming an optimal path between cluster head and base station by cost function. Simulation results demonstrate that LCUCR protocol can efficiently balance the energy consumption of network and prolong the network lifetime.
