Abstract

A down-to-earth, workmanlike and easy-to-follow account of how analytic and numerical methods can solve the diffusion equation and some of its generalizations in a series of increasingly complicated situations, with very many examples clearly worked through. The book is not taylor made for physicists, since it does not rely 500 on or exploit theoretical physics' common stock-in-trade of nomenclature, concepts, and analogies, and since some topics highly important to physics are ignored altogether (for instance neutron diffusion and Monte Carlo methods).
