Flow tests were run on 8-in. and 12-in. thin-wall, flexible PVC pipe designed for use as sewers. Pressure and open channel flow characteristics were investigated and analyzed. The velocity profiles were made. The tests showed that the Manning formula is not applicable to flows in PVC sewer pipe. The formula V = 216 R0.64 S0.55, or the Hazen-Williams formula, using a coefficient of 155, should be used for design purposes. Temperature has a significant effect that should be considered in critical or marginal designs. Head losses for the solvent cemented bell and spigot joint were measured, and coefficients of 0.0011 with the bell pointed downstream and 0.0068 with the bell pointed upstream were determined. Flow charts are presented.
