Abstract

The crude hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of root barks of U. narum and U. hookeri and the acetogenins uvariamicins I (1), II (2) and III (3) equimixture, isodesacetyluvaricin (4), squamocin-28-one (5), narumicins I (6) and II (7) stereomixture and squamocin (8) were screwed for their effects on mitotic division in Allium cepa. The effects produced were similar to those reported for cytotoxic plant extracts and adriamycin, a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, and included nuclear lesions, interphase cell death, spindle breakage, stickiness, somatic reduction in chromosomal number, binucleate cells, tropokinesis and pycnotic nuclei suggestive of cytotoxicity
