Conventional design practice for excavation support systems emphasizes determination of loads and selection of structural components. This paper presents a method which uses movement control as a central focus in the design process. Before structural design is finalized or specifications are written, issues associated with potential movements of the system are resolved. To assist working within the context of the new method, procedures are presented to guide the estimation of excavation support system movements.
