It is natural that the sc.ientific study of ruminant nutrition should have been directed in the first instance to the animals provided with food directly by man. Therefore-much literature is available relating to cattle handfed in feedlots for beef production or in byres for milk production, and to cattle and sheep fed in barns or yards during the winter when pastures are covered with snaw. Much less research has been done on the grazing animal (McDonald, 1968).
