The estimates of abortions state-wise trend of MTP in India and causes of illegal abortions including pragmatic and societal have been discussed. The enormous gap between estimated abortions and reported MTP cases suggests that only less than ten percent of the abortions are carried out in government recognized institutions. Safe abortion is not available to desiring women particularly in rural areas after twenty-four years of legislation of MTP. The paper points to a number of problems why abortion service is not available to women who want to undergo MTP and suggests certain remedial measures. (authors)
