The rehabilitation of degraded forest ecosystems is one of many options available to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gases. The Face Foundation has gained experience with such an abatement strategy since the early 1990s in several Joint Implementation projects. Standards and criteria being developed by various organisations are assessed alongside the principles employed by Face in the execution of its reforestation projects. It is concluded that a combination of additionality, cost-effectiveness and sustainability warrants a viable development of forestry and carbon sinks in developing countries. It is recommended that policy makers accept the challenge and take steps to define clear rules for sinks in CDM and accompanying certification.
