Abstract

Evidence derived from tissue-culture studies of an estrogen-induced dependent neoplasm of the kidney and an androgen-estrogen-induced dependent tumor of the flank organ in Syrian hamsters suggests that both are of epithelial origin. Cells from these hormone-dependent tumors can be grown in hormone-free media; the addition of crystalline hormone does not enhance growth or survival. However, when the kidney tumor is cultured as an “organ” fragment, growth does not occur, and survival time is greatly reduced unless estrogen is present in the culture medium. Responses to doses of 5, 10, and 25 µg. of diethylstilbestrol per ml. of culture medium indicate a graded effect—more mitoses occur at the higher value.
