An instrument is described which permits controlled and valid measurements of infant sucking behavior. The apparatus was applied to the investigation of the day-to-day changes of infant sucking within the first week of life. Changes in sucking behavior were found between the second and third days of life and were related to chronological age and not to a learning effect with the sucking instrument.
