Abstract

MANY investigators in the past have, at different times, called attention to the fact that preparations of proteins made by them persistently gave positive Molisch or orcinol tests. In no case, however, was any satisfactory evidence brought forward in support of the view that carbohydrate substances could be separated from proteins until Seemann [1898] obtained glucosamine from egg-albumin as the hydrochloride, after acid hydrolysis of the protein.
