The cup method has been used to measure the diffusion coefficient (or permeability) of water in free paint films. A dependence on the layer thickness of the diffusion coefficient could not be measured. The diffusion coefficient depends strongly on the relative humidity. The measured diffusion coefficient is found to be smaller than the measurement results from the literature on non-free paint films.
