It is very important to have an economic and accurate method of insulator fault detecting for ensuring reliable service of transmission line. The common detection methods were presented.and evaluated such as electric stress measuring, leakage current testing, ultrasonic detecting and infrared-temperature measuring.Paying more attention to ensuring transmission line safety, the real time on-line detection trends to main development. The main obstacle which prevents the common usage of on-line detecting system is the large quantity of line poles and towers. For introducing on-line detection of insulators it is necessary to unify the interface, prepare a strict maintenance-free instruction, determine proper characteristics, simplify the installation and select a reasonable mode of long-diatance signal transmission.
