Abstract

Tis work originated in an attempt to obtain a stable dry enzyme preparation, which would interact specifically with vitamin B1 crystals [Kinnersley, O'Brien and Peters, 1933]. Though this object has not been attained, the research has brought to light facts of fundamental interest not only for the vitamin function, but for the respiration of the normal brain itself [Peters and Sinclair, 1933]. It has made clear the necessity of pyrophosphate as such in the respiratory energy system of brain, which could not be so clearly distinguished without the avitaminous animal.
