Abstract

A lateral approach to the hip, using a U-shaped incision, has been developed. It provides wide exposure both anteriorly and posteriorly. It is particularly suitable for mold arthroplasty but can also be used for other procedures. It permits both anterior and posterior dislocation of the hip with ease and allows a complete capsulectomy to be done under direct vision, while preserving the femoral head and neck. A full view of the entire acetabulum is also obtained. The functional capacity of the abductor muscles is enhanced by transplanting the greater trochanter distally thereby increasing their functional length and the leverage for abductor function.
