Abstract

LARGE ulcers of the duodenum are rare. Only -L# 21 cases of duodenal ulcers of 2 cm. or more have been reported in the literature. These so-called giant duodenal ulcers may involve the entire duodenal bulb or the greatest part of it. Paradoxically, despite their size, they are often missed on barium studies of the gastrointestinal tract. Brdiczka,1 in 1931, was the first to report this lesion, and he presented 3 cases at that time. Since then, 18 additional cases have been reported. Of this total of 21, only 43 per cent were accurately diagnosed before surgery or post-mortem examination. . . .
