Forestry is very generally regarded as good in ecological and rural development terms, and as something to be promoted. This paper reviews a case study of one area where forestry may not be entirely positive in its effects and may produce conflicts with other land uses, as well as with ecological and employment aims. The latter part of the study points out some modifications which could be made to the afforestation programme which would make it more compatible with other land uses; this includes the introduc- tion of agro-forestry or conservational afforestation.
