Abstract

Abstract The imaging of magnetic objects in an electron microscope and, in particular, the extent to which the diffraction pattern is degraded by lack of coherence in the beam and non-magnetic electron scattering are discussed. The diffraction pattern from a strong stripe domain structure is considered and after allowance for the fact that the structure is not a perfect one-dimensional object, a one-dimensional intensity distribution is obtained which may be compared with synthesized diffraction patterns from models of domain walls. It is shown that it is possible to distinguish between various models for domain walls and that an existing model gives rise to a diffraction pattern strongly resembling those obtained experimentally.
