Combined field ionization gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (FI-GC-MS) is used frequently in this laboratory for the determination of molecular ions of compounds which do not give one by electron impact (EI). Although FI is less sensitive than EI-GC-MS, excellent spectra from as little as 50 ng of material injected on a GC column are routinely observed. FI spectra are usually easier to interpret than those from CI since there are no cluster ions due to a reagent gas. FI-GC-MS is useful for a wide variety of compounds.
