206 normal adults, aged 22 to 77 yr., were administered the hand dynamometer to obtain normative data with respect to age, sex, and dominant-nondominant hand differences. Application of commonly accepted criteria for detection of motor dysfunction using this instrument were made to the data and resulted in a significant number of false positive classifications. The findings have implications for the clinical use of this instrument.
