Reproducible antiviral activity in tissue culture and in ovo has been demonstrated with well-tolerated concentrations of amantadine HCl. All strains tested of the A, A1 and A2 groups of influenza were susceptible although antiviral activity was not limited to these since influenza C, parainfluenza 1/Sendai and pseudorabies were also inhibited. Greatest activity occurs with compound present at time of infection, although a reduction in the size of plaques produced by a sensitive virus was demonstrable with delayed treatment.
