Abstract

The desire to maximize repeater spacing in single-mode optical waveguide systems has created an interest in operating near 1550 nm, where silica-based fibers exhibit minimum loss. To achieve high bit rates, the zero-dispersion wavelength (λ0) must be shifted to the operating wavelength. This paper reports on the performance of segmented- core design fibers manufactured in a production environment tor long-haul dispersion-shifted applications.
