Some years ago the mechanism of crossing over occupied a major place in genetical discussions; now the surge of interest seems to have died down but the problems attacked cannot be said to have been satisfactorily solved. Yet the process of crossing over is a focal point for theories of the gene, and the frequency of recombination is one of the more precise genetic measures of the behavior of the chromosomes. We have recently planned experiments in which this index of chromosome behavior is to be correlated with a cytochemical study of the growth of the oöcyte under different conditions of diet. In order to facilitate this program we are here summarizing the information we have obtained regarding the interrelations of non-homologous chromosomes during crossing over. These phenomena, of interest in themselves in regard to the pattern of the nucleus as a whole at meiosis, provide methods of varying...
