A novel nanosheet-assembled hierarchical sulfur deficient β-In<sub>2.77</sub>S<sub>4</sub> microsphere photocatalyst was prepared, and the β-In<sub>2.77</sub>S<sub>4</sub> microsphere shown high visible light photocatalytic activity in the reduction of aqueous Cr(<sc>vi</sc>).
