An overall compression with anisotropic expansion of the Ce<sup>3+</sup> local environment resulted from incorporating Mg<sup>2+</sup> into the Y<sup>3+</sup> site. Insight into the crystal field splitting and the Stokes shift is given to interpret the Ce<sup>3+</sup> emission redshift.
