Abstract

This article reviews current literature in the field of participatory research and outlines elements that distinguish participatory research from traditional approaches to social science inquiry. I explore historical contributions to participatory research from popular education, feminism and international grassroots development. Participatory research is built around the concepts of people, power and praxis. I explain these concepts and consider the relevance of participatory research to social work theory and practice.
