In conjunction with an investigation (1,2) of racial identification of Negro pre-school children as indicative of a phase in the de velopment of consciousness of self, some Negro children from mixed New York nurs ery schools were compared with the main group of Negro children from segregated Washington, D. C. nursery schools. It was believed that such a comparison would give an indication of the possible effects of segre gation as a factor affecting the problem investigated.
