In England 24 different tablets incorporating 9 different progestogens are being studied in a central trial; there are large-scale trials in 9 clinics using 10 different products with 1200 patients who have completed over 7000 cycles. 4 oral contraceptive agents have been approved by the Council for Investigation of Fertility Control. These 4 products are compared for progestogen structure efficiency and acceptability side effects and effect on the menstrual cycle. Once the state of large-scale clinical trial has been reached the use of a product by 100 patients for optimum dose for each compound in relation to cycle control and the proportion of side effects which can vary markedly. The optimum dose for European women is not the same as the optimum dose for women of different races. Effects on endometrium and vaginal cytology are reviewed. Long-term effects are summarized.
