A six-degree-of-freedom nonlinear time-varying dynamic model of a spur gear pair is proposed to study the influence of friction on the dynamic response. The dynamic model is coupled with a quasi-static contact model for computation of the gear mesh stiffness, the dynamic transmission error, and dynamic tooth forces. A new friction coefficient model based on a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication formulation is incorporated in the dynamic model to include the influence of contact friction on both line-of-action and off-line- of-action vibrations of the gear pair. At the end, a number of parametric studies are presented to demonstrate the influence of major gear design, tooth modification, surface and lubrication parameters on the resultant dynamic behavior. 1
