Abstract

Facebook use and the influence of Facebook use on student academic performance. Extraversion was positively related to student self-reported measures of the time spent on Facebook giving support to the proposition that extraverted individuals use social networking as a means of social extension. This finding contradicts the suggestion that introverts will engage in greater social media use because of the ability to compensate for their lack of social skills. The amount of time that students spend on Facebook was found to be negatively related to academic performance. The significance of these findings is discussed with recommendations for future research.
