The next generation of medical CT scanners will measure up to 16 slices or more simultaneously whichwillrequire dedicated cone--beam reconstruction algorithms. The basic requirements for medical CT are high image quality and fast reconstruction (reconstruction of a complete volume within a few minutes is desired). Due to the small cone--angle (typically a few degrees only) approximate cone-- beam reconstruction will be the method of choice. A very promising candidate is the advanced single--slice rebinning (ASSR) which rebins the cone--beam data to parallel beam data on tilted reconstruction planes (R--planes) and utilizes 2D reconstruction algorithms to obtain tilted images [Med. Phys. 27(4), 754--772 (2000)].
