Gel filtration chromatography (GFC) has been used to isolate metal‐bearing soluble organic fractions from selected river samples and from mildly contaminated groundwaters around a radioactive waste disposal trench. These two independent tests suggest that GFC can be used to quantitatively evaluate organo‐metallic associations in natural waters. In addition to discriminating between total inorganic and organic modes of solution transport, the method can elucidate the role of different molecular weight organic fractions in trace metal mobilization.
