Differential thermal analysis shows experimentally that when natural magnetite (Fe ~3~ O ~4~ ) is heated it is oxidized directly to hematite. Gamma-Fe ~2~ O ~3~ does not form as an intermediate step, in contradistinction to the oxidation of most synthetic magnetites.
