A solution of the broadside back-scattering cross section, <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">\sigma</tex> , of a center-loaded cylindrical antenna with any load impedance, <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Z_{L}</tex> , is obtained by a variational method through a four-terminal network approach. A simple formula for <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">\sigma</tex> , in terms of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Z_{L}</tex> and the parameters <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Z_{11}, Z_{12}</tex> , and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Z_{22}</tex> associated with the antenna has been derived. The impedances <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Z_{11}, Z_{12}</tex> , and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Z_{22}</tex> are independent of the load and they are determined by using the variational principle. Numerical results of the first order approximation are presented, and they are in good agreement with some measured results available in the literature.
