An optical spectrum analyzer for high-speed optical communication systems was developed using a specially fabricated arrayed waveguide grating with a curved surface micromirror output and a linear image sensor. The resolution and dynamic range were investigated theoretically and experimentally, considering the magnification of the imaging system and the characteristics of the image sensor. A spectrum of continuous-wave light from 1543.0 to 1573 nm was successfully observed. Spectra of 8-ps short optical pulses from a mode-locked laser diode operating at 1.5 μm were also successfully observed with a maximum resolution of 15 GHz for 15-fold magnification.
