China Southern Power Grid’s new wide‑area damping control system uses PMU measurements to improve inter‑area oscillation damping, marking the first real‑grid deployment of continuous feedback control. The paper details the design, implementation, and operational challenges of the WADC and presents results from field closed‑loop tests. The system modulates two HVDC links, relying on phasor data from six 500‑kV substations, fiber‑optic links, real‑time computers, and control units at the rectifier station to interface with the HVDCs. The study concludes by outlining plans for future expansion of wide‑area control across the CSG network.
A wide-area damping control system (WADC) has recently been developed by China southern power grid (CSG), to enhance the damping performance of inter-area oscillations in CSG. It's the first time that PMU measurements are used as input to a continuous feedback control system in a real bulk power grid. The WADC uses modulation of two HVDC systems for power system damping. The control system comprises phasor measurements at six 500 kV substations, fiber-optic communications, real-time control computers, control units at rectifier station and interface between HVDC and WADC. This paper introduces the designing aspects of the WADC and the subsequent implementation and operation issues. Results of closed-loop testing in the field will be presented. The paper concludes with a future development of the wide-area control in CSG.
