The authors examine several magnetic characterization techniques which are easily implemented using elements of a partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) channel. These techniques are applicable over a broad range of topics. The use of the PRML digital samples with specialized data patterns to detect defective media sites is discussed. A sensitive and calibrated method for measuring fly height variations is outlined. A statistical measurement scheme that provides a figure of merit for magnetic performance is discussed.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
