Solar white‐light intensity maxima form a characteristic spatial pattern at the solar root of an interplanetary sector boundary, different for +/− and for −/+ boundaries. At a sector boundary, interplanetary magnetic polarities correspond to solar follower fields in the ascending part of the solar activity cycle and to leader fields in the decline.
