J2 dynamics and formation flight

Abstract

We study the dynamics of the relative motion of
\nsatellites in the gravitational field of the Earth, including
\nthe effects of the bulge of the Earth (the J_2
\neffect). Using Routh reduction and dynamical systems
\nideas, a method is found that locates orbits
\nsuch that a cluster of satellites remains close with
\nvery little dispersing, even with no controls.
