OCCLUSION OF THE RIGHT POSTERIOR INFERIOR CEREBELLAR ARTERY AND RIGHT VERTEBRAL ARTERY

Abstract

The symptom complex following occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery or the vertebral artery has been frequently described in the literature, and its diagnostic importance has been emphasized. Most observers, however, who have reported cases of this syndrome have not been able to obtain necropsies in their cases, because in many instances the patients recovered. We recently observed a case which was unusual clinically in that both the posterior inferior cerebellar artery and the vertebral artery of the right side were involved almost simultaneously. Several observers have noted that it is difficult at times to differentiate clinically between occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar and the vertebral arteries, and others in reports on the bulbar syndrome have included cases of occlusion of the vertebral artery as well as of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery.
