The infrared and Raman frequencies of monoclinic zirconia and of stabilized and metastable tetragonal and cubic zirconias were established. Infrared spectra were examined by the powder transmission (CsI pellet) and surface reflection techniques. The effects of heating, grinding, and adding stabilizing oxides on the ir spectra were determined. The spectra develop additional bands as the crystal symmetry is lowered, and certain of these bands are highly sensitive to strain‐induced distortions of the crystal lattice. Practical applications of ir and Raman spectroscopy to zirconia technology are discussed.
