A program was established for monitoring of all pneumococcal isolates from ordinarily stenle clinical specimens from 46 hospitals in 26 states of the United States. The isolates were categorized by the Danish system of nomenclature, i.e., the serogroup is indicated by number and the type within the group by letter. Of 809 isolates, 552 (68.2%) were types Included III the current vaccine formulation, and 137 (16.2010) were types serologically related to the vaccine types.
